BROWNSVILLE, TX – The Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) launched its Continuous Water Consumption Notification Program on Nov. 1, which notifies customers when their Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters detect uninterrupted water consumption over a 24-hour period.
The AMI system can identify continuous water usage that may indicate a potential leak or issue. When this activity is detected, customers will receive a notification by email from NoReply@brownsville-pub.com or by text message from 96681.
Initial notifications for continuous water consumption will be sent at 8 a.m. the morning after the 24-hour condition is detected to avoid overnight disruptions.
“Being aware of how water is used at your property can help you make informed decisions about your consumption,” BPUB General Manager and CEO Marilyn D. Gilbert said. “We want to give our customers the tools to recognize unusual usage and address potential issues before they become bigger concerns.”
Continuous water consumption can result from several sources, including irrigation systems, plumbing fixtures, appliances, water treatment equipment or other water-related activities. A notification does not necessarily mean a leak is present. Customers are encouraged to review their water use and determine whether the activity is expected.
If continuous water consumption persists, customers may receive follow-up notifications. BPUB will send a notification at 8 a.m. the following day after previously detected continuous consumption is no longer observed.
The program is part of BPUB’s ongoing efforts to use AMI technology to provide customers with useful information about their utility services and support informed water-use decisions.
Customers can review their water usage through their online customer portal, accessible at www.bpub.com.
