We are removing accumulated sediment from reservoirs and resacas to create more space for the raw water used to produce Brownsville’s drinking water. These dredging operations support our water system and help strengthen our community’s water-supply resilience.

Why Dredging Matters
We draw water from the Rio Grande and store it in reservoirs and the local resaca system before treatment. These storage areas play an important role in delivering drinking water to homes and businesses.
Over time, sediment accumulates and reduces the space available to hold water. Dredging removes this material, increasing storage capacity that can contribute to our raw-water supply.
Where We Are Focusing
Our dredging priorities include the Banco Morales reservoir system along the Rio Grande and Resaca de la Guerra.
Banco Morales Reservoir System
Dredging within the Banco Morales reservoir system will support raw-water storage. Previously collected Resaca Fee funds will help support eligible dredging operations within this system.
Resaca de la Guerra
Resaca de la Guerra is central to our planned Water Renewal Project . Through the Resaca de la Guerra Resilience and Restoration Project, we will remove accumulated sediment, improve water quality, and restore aquatic and riparian habitat.
